Smarter and more valuable work is made possible by agile working. Wait. What do you say? Yep, you heard that right, agile working! This is more about working smarter rather than working harder. Because why work harder if you don't need to? Exactly. There are lovers but also doubters when it comes to agile working. But when you are part of a constant and rapidly changing environment, agile working and digital scrumming become almost inevitable.
Scrumming? What are you talking about?
Scrumming, preferably digital, is one of the many agile working methods. It is a flexible way of working together to develop products. But where does it come from? Scrumming has its origins in the sport of rugby. The tactics of the sport are transferred to the work floor. A multidisciplinary team works in defined sprints. Insightful sprints of two to a maximum of four weeks. Each sprint has a goal and delivers a Minimum Viable Product (MVP). This is the first version of a product or service to be rolled out to the customer.
Unfortunately, not everyone is a fan of digital scrumming. But within education, Generation Z and Alpha are already immersed in the world of scrum. Because let's be honest. Working in an organised way makes us all very happy. So, these generations will soon know no better when it comes to this agile working method. They are already completely ready for the modern workplace.
Benefits of scrumming during meetings
Why does scrumming work so well? Agile working, and therefore scrumming, have a lot of advantages. And not only for adults. It also seems to work very well for children. Maybe something to try at home? 😉
- Extensive projects become manageable. With scrum, the work that is finished and the work that still needs to be done remains clear for the entire team.
- You can see at a glance who is responsible for what and how things are going. You know what you can help someone with. Or you redistribute the tasks.
- Scrumming during meetings brings peace.
- Everyone feels more involved in the project, which in turn stimulates productivity.
- Because of the structure of scrumming during meetings, progress is optimally monitored. And there is maximum control over the project, which makes it easier to respond more quickly to changing priorities.
In the end, of course, you cannot be an expert in every part of the project. Or have tons of time available. But with scrum, we learn to be transparent to each other in terms of planning. And our strengths and challenges are mapped out more clearly. So, it allows you to grow within your projects.
This is how you start with scrumming
1. Visual and dynamic meetings
Make sure you make meetings as visual as possible. But why communicate visually? Well, why not, you might say? You can visibly show your thoughts, ideas and plans. And that is important. Because we remember visual information much better. Complex information also becomes uncomplicated. Communicating visually also ensures more engagement, which in turn translates into a dynamic meeting. Hello, interaction and creativity.
2. Meet the Scrum Master
To ensure that the meeting does not turn out into a chaotic disaster, it is good to have one central point of contact. Also called the Scrum Master. The Scrum Master takes charge and ensures that a scrum project runs smoothly. The most important task of the Scrum Master is to get the team to perform at its best. The Scrum Master also helps to make decisions and ensures that the mood of the meeting remains positive. Without it turning it into a party, of course.
3. Time management
A long, drawn-out meeting where everyone loses focus after 30 minutes is far from sufficient. Therefore, make sure that most sessions do not last longer than 15 minutes. This keeps the momentum going. There is no room for side issues. Keep it to the point.
Scrumming on a touchscreen
There are also various wishes when it comes to scrumming. That is why there are different scrum boards to choose from. It is a matter of experimenting with the layout of the board until you have found the best visualisation for your team. But where we still come across whiteboards or paper scrum boards stuck full of post-its - which may or may not be lying around everywhere - you can now think about a much more sustainable solution. How about scrumming on a touchscreen?
The key to scrumming, of course, is that you meet regularly to go over your sprints. The budgets for physical office space are often not that great. With a touchscreen in combination with online scrum tools, you no longer need to look for expensive additional office space. On one interactive display, each team can create visual spaces within the desired online project management tools. This way, all your projects are centralised, and you can also share them from your laptop, tablet or phone.
No more hassle with lost written notes. And you do not have to ask each other what the latest version of the sprint is any longer. Which saves a lot of administration!
